Physical Recovery & Return to Duty
Accelerating recovery from musculoskeletal injury and exercise-induced muscle damage directly impacts SOF operational readiness and time-to-return. The following studies confirm HBOT’s role in accelerating physical recovery.
Luo X, Zhang J, Wang Y, et al. (2025). Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Meta-analysis of 10 RCTs (n=299) confirming HBOT significantly accelerates recovery from exercise-induced muscle injury (p<0.0001). Effective across both higher (>2.0 ATA) and lower (≤2.0 ATA) pressure protocols. Benefits observed in both general populations and elite athletes. 100-minute sessions showed the strongest effect on muscle soreness reduction.
Early Recovery of Exercise-Related Muscular Injury by HBOT
Chen CY, Lee CW, Hsu WC, et al. (2019). BioMed Research International (21 citations)
RCT in athletes with exercise-related muscular injury (n=41). 10 HBOT sessions produced significant reductions in creatine phosphokinase, GOT, and myoglobin, sustained at two-week follow-up. Significant improvements in pain intensity and interference. The control group showed no comparable improvement.
HBOT in Sports Musculoskeletal Injuries
Moghadam N, Hieda M, Gianella M, et al. (2019). Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (29 citations)
Comprehensive review confirming HBOT’s documented efficacy in crush injuries, compromised grafts/flaps, and necrotizing soft tissue infections. Sporting injuries typically treated over 3–10 sessions. Any reduction in rehabilitation period is operationally and financially significant for military and professional athletes.
HBOT Improves Mitochondrial Respiration and Physical Performance in Master Athletes: A Blinded RCT
Hadanny A, Hachmo Y, Rozali D, et al. (2022). Sports Medicine – Open
Double-blind, placebo-controlled RCT in 37 healthy middle-aged (40–50) master athletes (40 sessions at 2.0 ATA vs. sham). HBOT significantly increased maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max; p=0.010, effect size 0.989) and oxygen consumption at the anaerobic threshold, alongside significant gains in maximal mitochondrial phosphorylation capacity and mitochondrial mass. Demonstrates HBOT can raise the aerobic performance ceiling in trained adults, directly relevant to sustaining operator physical readiness.
Synthesis: A 2025 meta-analysis of 10 RCTs confirms HBOT significantly accelerates muscle injury recovery across populations. Individual athlete RCTs show reduced biomarkers of tissue damage and faster return to function. The evidence supports HBOT as an effective adjunctive recovery modality for SOF operators managing high training loads and cumulative musculoskeletal wear.
